Traditional lower-third and absolute co-witness heights were developed during an era when shooters maintained a more aggressive forward-leaning stance and spent less time wearing modern equipment such as helmets, ear protection, communications gear, and night vision devices.

Today’s shooters often benefit from a more upright head position. A taller optic mount can improve comfort, reduce neck strain, enhance situational awareness, and make target transitions faster.

That doesn’t mean every rifle needs the tallest mount available. Different applications call for different solutions.

Choosing the Right Height

Low Mount

The Low DOT Mount is designed for applications where maintaining a low optic position is critical.

It is particularly well suited for subguns, AK platforms with railed gas tubes, and firearms where co-witnessing with iron sights is desired. By keeping the optic as close to the bore as possible, the Low Mount preserves the handling characteristics and sight picture many shooters prefer on compact platforms.

Lower 1/3 Co-Witness

The Lower 1/3 Co-Witness height remains one of the most popular options for general-purpose carbines.

This height places the optic slightly above traditional absolute co-witness mounts, providing a cleaner sight picture while still allowing backup iron sights to remain visible in the lower portion of the optic window.

1.93″ Height

Why We Don’t Currently Offer a 2.26″ DOT Mount

One of the most common questions we receive is whether Reptilia will offer a 2.26″ DOT Mount. The short answer is: maybe. The longer answer is that mount height should be driven by a specific requirement, not simply because taller exists and YouTube influencers say its cool.

While taller optic heights can provide significant advantages for shooters running night vision, helmets, communications equipment, or pro masks, there is a point where the tradeoffs begin to outweigh the benefits for many users. As optic height increases, maintaining a stable position during traditional prone shooting can become more challenging, and mechanical offset at close distances becomes more pronounced. For shooters who spend most of their time on flat ranges, in conventional shooting positions, or without night vision equipment, the practical advantages of additional height often become less clear.

Our current DOT Mount lineup reflects what we believe offers the best balance of performance, versatility, and usability across the broadest range of real world applications. Could a 2.26″ mount make sense for certain users? For sure. For those who spend significant time passively aiming under night vision, it can be a valuable tool. But for the average shooter, taller isn’t automatically better, it simply serves a different purpose.

As always, we’re paying attention to customer feedback and evolving use cases. If demand and application justify it, a 2.26″ DOT Mount may find its way into the lineup in the future.
